Hola adventurers! This week I wanted to provide you with something that was brought to my attention on Kickstarter that looks absolutely fantastic. If you are a fan of computer software that makes it easy to let your creative mind flow, then you should definitely check out MapForge by Battlegrounds Games LLC. The description of the product is a “Low-cost and easy-to-use map-making software focused on creating gorgeous hi-resolution tile-based tactical-scale battlemaps”.
By watching the videos on their kickstarter, they are not lying about the gorgeousness of what you can design and come up with. Not only does it look super easy to use by dropping in tiles, but it also has features where you can add lighting, shadow, and extra bits into everything. I for one can’t wait to get my hands on this. I could easily see this being incorporated into sessions of D&D online via Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, or just simply screen-sharing a map through Google Hangouts.
The makers are even partnering with other established 3rd Parties who specialize in Battle-maps. These texture add-ons will be available for download in the software itself giving endless varieties of maps you will be able to create easily on your own. And it looks like a couple of Stretch Goals have already been reached that unlocked 5 free content Add-Ons for everyone, as well as support for random dungeon generation.
This product is in its very basic state, so I haven’t had the opportunity or pleasure of diving in first hand to review it. It does have a prototype version that I will be playing around with. The developer of this clarified as I asked what the full version would look like. He said , “the prototype currently only lets you make large maps out of pre-made map tiles, and that’s all people can really see right now, but when the program is complete, it will be a full-fledged map-making app, letting you make maps from scratch, if that’s what you prefer”. That to me is very exciting as I do love to make custom things myself as well. But for sure, you can bet that once it gets a full release, I will be looking to review it more in depth. So head on over to the MapForge Kickstarter, DEFINITELY watch the full videos and read all the exciting things that they have going on.
